Today, let’s talk about resolve. Well, what do you mean by “resolve”? It’s like saying, “I speak words of happiness,” or “I am love, light, and patience,” and I tell people to say that 100 times a day. Some people can do it, and some can’t. And even if you’re saying words of happiness, some people still can’t find happiness.
So when you talk about wanting to be happy or not, it’s your own matter. Don’t keep talking about yourself. Speaking negative words disturbs those around you. If you don’t smile, it’s bothersome to others. Even if you’re not happy, just say “I am happy.”
And if you have a happy face, that’s enough. Keep saying heavenly words like “I’m happy every day!” If you keep making an unhappy face and spreading negative words, you’re bothering people.
When you do something, you have to resolve. When you resolve, miracles happen. You can’t do something halfway. Most people have intelligence. So when you ask, “Why do some people succeed and others don’t?” it’s because they lack resolve.
Uh, there’s this thing called MK Taxi in Kyoto, and the people there, I think they are Korean. When they came to Japan to work, they came with the resolve that if Japanese people sleep for 8 hours, they would sleep for 5 hours. When Japanese people eat rice, they would eat wheat. That’s what it means to come to a foreign country to work. Japanese people also immigrated to Hawaii and Brazil and faced tremendous hardships. Trying to succeed in a foreign country is undoubtedly a challenging endeavor.
But those who think that hardships are normal from the beginning, hardships don’t feel like hardships to them. However, those who don’t want to face hardships easily give up. When you enter society, you don’t need special talents or anything. Today, someone who wants to start a marriage consulting company is here, saying that they will be happier than any other marriage consulting firm. If you have the resolve to fight through any difficulties, you will definitely succeed.
In this world, most things aren’t special. To put it simply, you can learn from what others are doing. If you go to popular consulting firms and ask what they are doing, they will tell you and even give you a catalog. You shouldn’t peek at school exams, but you can see and learn others in business. So, even if you have intelligence, without resolve, you won’t shine. Not shining means that, well, I only went to junior high school, but most people have gone to high school or university. But in the world, you don’t use one-third of what you learn in school. However, without resolve, you can’t do anything. Just make up your mind. So, my parents told me to go to college, but I didn’t want to, so I didn’t go.
Going into society after junior high school is undoubtedly tough. Do you understand? But there are also advantages to entering society early. So, well, there are people who say, “I graduated from junior high school and enter society after that, and I’m being looked down upon,” but it’s certain that you will be looked down upon. Do you understand? It’s only natural.
If you eat too much, you’ll be called fat. It’s certain. That’s the way the world works. So what? You have to be able to say it without hesitation. I’d rather eat what I want and get fat. If you want to lose weight, go ahead, but I want to eat. In other words, it’s a matter of resolve.
“I didn’t think this would happen,” but it will. If you eat too much, you’ll get fat. If you don’t go to school, you’ll be looked down upon. That’s the way the world works. You are able not to mind that. So, no matter what business you’re in, whether it’s a ramen shop or anything else, if you don’t have resolve, you won’t succeed at anything. Stop complaining, but that’s how the world works. You understand?
Smiles are undoubtedly good. When I tell people to smile, they say, “Saito-san is successful, so it’s easy for you to say.” Don’t say that. You just have to do it. I don’t want to keep repeating things like a child. Do you understand? Heavenly words are undoubtedly better. Just do it! Even if the results don’t come quickly, a smile is better. Do you understand? Being grumpy is bothersome to those around you. So, you must not bother those around you.
The other day, there was a young man who had tinnitus and didn’t go to work. His wife was worried, and the mothers were worried too. So, I told him how to cure it and asked him to come see me. I advised him to say, “I’m getting better every day,” because even if he complains in front of his wife, she’s not a doctor, so he won’t get better. It’s bothering people, so you should say, “I’m getting better every day.” Think about whether what you’re saying is bothering people or not! Do you understand?
We carry the karma from past lives, so there are various karmas in our lives. We call them “destinies.” However, for every one of these destinies, we also have a will of a hundred. So, even if there are a hundred destinies, if the strength of our will is a hundred, they cancel each other out, and it becomes zero. When that happens, we can go anywhere without any resistance.
Now, if you wonder why that will doesn’t manifest, it’s because there’s not enough resolve. You need the resolve not to listen to what your parents say, even if they tell you this or that. I didn’t listen to my teachers, and I decided I would never do my homework. I absolutely wouldn’t do it. No matter how much homework they assigned, I didn’t care. I decided I wouldn’t do it. It’s my life, after all.
In return, since I didn’t listen to my teachers or do my homework, I had to make my own way. Everyone needs to make their resolve. Do what you believe is right because there are many paths in this world. You must not break the law, though.
But what teachers in school and society say is like walking a tightrope straight, and if you fall off, it’s a disaster, right? But when you take one step down, all that’s there is solid ground. You’re free to go anywhere. Life is not such a narrow path. And your parents and teachers don’t know about the world. It’s really vast.
Being free means there are thorny paths too. There are plenty of difficult things. But there is freedom as well. So, no matter what you do, whether you become a salaried worker or a homemaker, you just need to have the resolve.
The most shameful thing as a human is saying, “I didn’t expect this to happen.” It’s because you didn’t think it through. If you think about it carefully, it’s obvious. If you eat too much, you’ll get fat. That’s for sure. In a society focused on education, not going to school means you’ll be looked down upon, right?
But I’ve never been looked down upon. Why, you ask? It’s because I think that if someone belittles me, they’ll have a tough time with my killer instinct. Do you get it? Being looked down upon isn’t because you didn’t go to school; it’s because you’re weak. There was a person who was raised by their father after their parents divorced, and they were bullied in school. But if the single parent had been a yakuza gangster, they wouldn’t have been bullied, right? So, it’s because people are weak that they get bullied. And what makes them weak? It’s a lack of resolve.
Think carefully. When I decided not to go to school, there were many consequences. Do you understand? Even if you don’t go to school, you have to deal with the consequences. If you go to school, that’s your strength. And those with weaknesses will become stronger. Do you get it? What do you need to strengthen? Your resolve.
Think about it carefully. Like when you’re a mother, and your daughter is going to get married, instead of worrying, you should think, “I’ll support her for life.” If the marriage doesn’t work out, she can come back anytime. Say, “I’ll take care of you no matter what because you’re my child.” It’s all about having the resolve. Then everything will be okay.
Saying, “You’ll definitely be happy,” is just annoying. Nobody knows for sure if their child will be happy. What you do know is your own resolve. Say, “Even if you come back, I’ll make you happy, and I’ll live a long life for that.” Do you understand? Resolve is just like that.
